Claude now bans using it to fake AI search answers
The penalty for breaking the new rule is losing access to Claude altogether.
Anthropic has banned people from using Claude to manipulate the sources that search engines and AI tools pull their answers from. The change was announced on October 8 and takes effect on November 12. The penalty for breaking it is losing access to Claude.
The new section was spotted by @HannsKronenberg and @MattGSouthern, and flagged on Monday by Lily Ray. She lists three things the policy now rules out. Using Claude to seed the sources that search engines and AI systems draw answers from with content that hides who wrote it or who is behind it. Pushing content through networks of fake or supposedly independent sites to hide that it all comes from one source. And building or selling tools that do any of this.
The policy's own example is networks of sites posing as unaffiliated sources all backing the same claim. Fake reviews and fake personas were already banned. What is new is search. Lily Ray points out that the previous version of the policy, from September 2025, did not mention search engines or AI answers at all.
Why SEOs are paying attention
Glenn Gabe read it as the AI companies starting to police their own results the way Google polices search.
Shaun Anderson put it more bluntly, saying Claude has picked up spam guidelines of its own, and wondering how many startups the rule kills.
Lily Ray compared the moment to the early days of Google's spam policies.
What it means for your site
If you write your own articles under your own name on your own site, nothing here touches you. This rule is about hiding who is behind content, not about using AI to help write it. A real business publishing real pages about what it actually does is not what the policy describes.
The people who should care are anyone paying for a service that promises to get their brand mentioned in AI answers. Some of those services work by spinning up a stable of blogs and forum accounts that look independent and all say the same nice thing about a client. That approach is now against Anthropic's rules, and the tool it may have been built on can be switched off.
So the one thing to do is ask. If an agency or a tool is selling you AI visibility, ask them in writing how the mentions are created and whose name is on the pages. If the answer involves a network of sites you have never heard of, that is the kind of setup this policy names.
Anthropic's rules only cover Anthropic's own tools. Nobody knows yet whether other AI companies will add the same language.
like we've been saying for a long time, the AI platforms are NOT going to let the gaming of AI Search continue to happen
The previous version (Sept 2025) *didn't mention search engines or AI answers at all.*
