Buying cheap backlinks can quietly sink your site

A new marketplace sells links for pennies, and several well known SEOs say the sites buying them will pay for it later.

A tool called Outrank has launched a marketplace where you can buy backlinks (links from other sites to yours) cheaply from a shared pool of sites. Ian Nuttall warned buyers they would "get slapped out of the Google index and burn your domain forever". The post blew up, and a string of well known SEOs piled in to agree.

Why it is the pattern, not the link

Marie Haynes, who has spent years helping sites recover from Google penalties, explained how Google actually catches this. She says every page gets a spam score, and Google's system for spotting manipulation, SpamBrain, is looking for patterns rather than judging one link at a time. If a handful of sites keep linking out to the same group of customers, that pattern is easy to see.

Her description of what happens next is the part worth reading twice. The links sometimes help at first. Then rankings start sliding. The site owner buys more links or starts tweaking pages to chase rankings, which makes the pattern stronger and pushes the spam score higher. If the score gets too high, the site stops ranking at all. Haynes says people reach out to her in desperation because everything they used to do has stopped working and they have no idea why.

Nuttall made the same point about the mechanics. Once one service has a network of sites willing to sell links and a queue of customers buying, you get a very clear footprint. He called it a PBN, a private blog network, and said it is one of the fastest routes to a manual action, which is a human reviewer at Google applying a penalty to your site. He also noted this is a risk, not a certainty, and that the damage may show up as a drop with every algorithm update rather than one overnight disappearance.

Who else said it

Nathan Gotch said nothing is worse than starting your morning with a manual action from Google, and that he has been there. Connor Showler warned against the same marketplace, arguing the sites in it have no rankings of their own and are not sorted by industry. Lily Ray backed Haynes, saying she has a ton of experience on the subject.

If you run a small business site, the takeaway is simple. Do not buy links from a bulk marketplace, however cheap they look, because the money you save now gets spent later on someone expensive who tries to dig you out. Nuttall added one more piece of advice worth taking regardless. Build an email list and a community somewhere you own, so a search ranking is not the only thing holding your business up.

At best: the links will do nothing and Google will simply ignore them.
