Claude searches the web when its facts get old

Anthropic's newest Claude model stops at June 2026, so anything you changed since then has to be findable online.

Anthropic has released a new Claude model, Haiku 5.5, and its published system prompt tells it to point people toward web search when its own knowledge may be out of date. The model's reliable knowledge cutoff is June 2026, meaning anything that changed after that date is not in its training.

That is the point small business owners should care about. Alex Groberman (@alexgroberman) walked through Anthropic's documentation and noted that Anthropic's web search docs say Claude searches for current prices, recent information and details about organizations or products that may have changed. So if someone asks Claude about your business and your prices moved last month, the answer depends on what Claude can find on the open web.

The search is not guaranteed

Claude does not search every time newer information exists. Anthropic's guide for Haiku says that even when the model is handed a search tool, it can still skip a search that would turn up newer information. According to @alexgroberman, Anthropic says this happens most often at low effort settings and with long system prompts.

Anthropic's fix is aimed at developers, not at you. Give the model today's date and explicitly remind it that things like prices, versions, rules, records and anything "latest" may have changed. In Anthropic's testing that increased searching on questions whose answers had actually changed, and on questions that did not need a search it caused unnecessary searches in only 0 to 3% of attempts.

What it means for your site

You cannot control how a developer configures Claude. You can control what the model finds when it does go looking. @alexgroberman's point is that if you changed your pricing, launched a product, added an integration, opened a new location or published a new customer result after the model's cutoff, public sources become much more important.

In practice that means keeping clear, crawlable (readable by search engines) pages for pricing, products and services, locations, case studies, comparisons and the questions customers actually ask before buying. Press, reviews and industry coverage add more public sources a web-connected Claude could run into while researching your company.

The practical step is small. Open the pages that list your prices, locations and services, and check that each one shows the current details in plain text on the page rather than in a PDF, an image or behind a login. If a page is still showing last year's prices, fix that one first.
