Google is dropping the "AI Overview" label from some answers
Unlabelled AI answers may be why tracking tools suddenly show fewer of them.
Google appears to be removing the "AI Overview" label from some of its AI written answers at the top of search results. Glenn Gabe spotted it first, on searches for shows and movies. He said he noticed it that morning and wondered if more AI Overviews would start appearing without labelling.
An AI Overview is the block of AI written text Google puts above the normal blue links. Until now it came with a label telling you what it was. On the searches Gabe flagged, that label was gone.
Why it matters for your numbers
Barry Schwartz connected the missing label to something else happening at the same time. Semrush, a tool many people use to track how often AI Overviews appear for their keywords, is reporting a drop in that number. Schwartz does not buy it. He said it has to be a bug in Semrush tracking because he sees AI Overviews everywhere.
That is the practical point. Tracking tools often look for the label to decide whether an AI answer was there. Take the label away and the tool sees nothing, even though the AI answer is sitting right at the top of the page pushing your listing down. So a reported drop in AI Overviews may not be a real drop at all.
Nobody has said whether this is a deliberate change or a bug. Google has not commented in the sources, and Schwartz himself asked the question out loud rather than answering it.
What to do
If you use a tool that reports AI Overview coverage for your keywords, treat any sudden drop this week with suspicion. Pick three or four of the searches that matter most to your business and run them yourself in Google. Look at what is above the first blue link. If there is a block of AI written text there, the AI answer is still running whether your dashboard says so or not.
For most small business owners, nothing about your site needs to change today. This is a measurement problem, not a ranking one. The thing worth knowing is that the number in your tool may now be lower than reality, so do not read it as good news and do not make a decision based on it.
This is one SEO spotting a pattern and another agreeing it looks off. It is early, it may be a bug, and it may be reverted by the time you read this. Check by hand before you trust the chart.
this has to be a bug in Semrush tracking - I see AIOs everywhere
I wonder if we will see more AIOs without labeling
