Google rankings are moving again this week

One tracker says the shifting started Tuesday and carried into Wednesday, and Google has not confirmed anything.

Google search rankings started shifting on Tuesday and the movement carried into Wednesday, according to Barry Schwartz, who posts about ranking volatility daily. He described it as volatility heating up. Google has not announced an update, so there is no confirmed cause.

What this actually means

Volatility just means positions are bouncing around more than usual. Pages that sat at number four might show up at number eight for a day, then come back. Tracking tools pick this up before anyone knows why, and sometimes the reason never gets confirmed.

This follows a run of unsettled weeks. The early September drop that wiped out traffic for some sites fully reversed a few days later, which is a useful reminder that a sudden fall is not always permanent and not always your fault.

What to do if your rankings moved

Do nothing this week. That is the honest answer. Rewriting pages, pulling content or changing your site structure in the middle of a wobble makes it much harder to tell later what actually happened.

Instead, write down where you stand right now. Open Google Search Console, click Performance, set the date range to the last 28 days and note your clicks and average position. If things settle back in a few days, you have your answer. If they do not, you have a clean before picture to compare against.

One thing worth checking is whether the movement is real or just your tool. Ranking trackers can lag, so confirm any drop in Search Console rather than trusting a third party dashboard alone.

Who this affects

Anyone who watches their Google positions. Small sites often see bigger percentage swings than big ones simply because a single keyword matters more to them, so a normal week of volatility can look alarming on a small dashboard.

So far this is one person reporting increased movement, with no word from Google. Treat it as weather, not climate. Check your numbers, sit tight, and see where things land.
