Spam update looks like it is hitting template-built pages

One well known SEO is seeing early hits on sites that spin up a near-identical page for every phone number or area code.

Google's current spam update looks like it is landing on sites built from page templates. Lily Ray posted that she is seeing early signs that the update is hitting sites with highly templated, programmatic pages, giving the example of one page for every phone number or area code. A spam update is a ranking change aimed at sites that break Google's spam rules, and this one started rolling out and takes about two weeks.

Early signs that the current Google Spam update is hitting sites with highly templated, programmatic, (probably) AI-generated pages, like one page for every phone number/area code

This is one SEO's read on early data. Google has not said which kinds of sites the update targets, so treat it as a signal and not a confirmed rule.

What "programmatic" actually means here

Programmatic pages are pages generated in bulk from a template, where a database swaps in a word or a number and everything else stays the same. Ray's example is the clearest version of it, a separate page for every single area code, each one saying more or less the same thing with a different digit. She also noted the pages she is seeing are probably AI-generated.

That is not the same as writing articles with AI help. Google has said before that bulk pages are judged on quality rather than on how they were made. The problem is a page that exists only to catch a keyword and does not answer anything once somebody lands on it.

What to do

Most small business sites have nothing to worry about here. If you do have a set of pages that were generated from one template, like a page per city, per zip code or per service variation, open a few of them side by side and read them. If the only difference between two pages is the place name, they are the kind of thing Ray is describing.

Merge those into one strong page, or rewrite each one so it carries real detail about that place or service. Then check Google Search Console over the next two weeks and see whether traffic to those pages holds up while the update finishes rolling out.
