Google has switched on a universal shopping cart

Barry Schwartz says the new cart runs on something Google calls the Universal Commerce Protocol, and sellers do not yet know what they need to do.

Google Universal Cart is live. Barry Schwartz posted that it went live today and that it is powered by something Google calls the Universal Commerce Protocol, shortened to UCP. That is the whole of what has been said so far.

What we actually know

The name says cart, and the second name says commerce protocol (a shared set of rules that different systems agree to follow so they can talk to each other). Beyond the launch itself and those two names, the source does not spell out how it works, which shops are in it, or what a buyer sees.

So treat the rest as unknown for now. Nobody has published the requirements for sellers. There is no stated list of supported stores, no stated fee, no stated launch countries. If you sell online and you are waiting for a sign-up link, there is not one yet that has been reported.

Why a small shop owner should care

Anything with the word cart in it sits at the exact point where you get paid. A checkout that lives inside Google rather than on your own site is a different path for a customer than the one you built, and it is worth knowing it exists before a customer mentions it to you.

It is also early. One well known industry reporter noting a launch is not the same as a documented product with onboarding steps. Plenty of Google launches arrive in one country first, or inside one surface first, and spread later. Do not rebuild anything on the strength of a single line.

What to do this week

Do nothing to your site. There is no action available yet, because no one has published what taking part involves.

Instead, put a reminder in your calendar for a week out and check whether Google has posted its own documentation for the Universal Commerce Protocol. If it has, the thing to look for is the bit that tells you how your products get in, whether your shopping platform handles it for you, and who owns the customer details after a sale.

In the meantime, keep your own product pages in good shape. Clear titles, real prices, real stock levels and real shipping information are what feed every shopping surface Google has ever run, and that work is not wasted whatever Universal Cart turns out to be.

We will cover the seller requirements here as soon as they are published.
