Google warns sites that let users publish pages

Google now tells any site that lets users publish pages, generated outputs or interactive tools to watch for manual actions. Lily Ray's first thought was Claude artifacts and ChatGPT pages, and the warning lands on anyone with a forum or user profiles too.

Why your traffic moved

Rankings moved again, and a big tracker explains its bad data

Barry Schwartz reports another unconfirmed Google ranking update over the past 24 hours, following a heated Saturday update. Separately, Semrush published an official statement on Google poisoning search results data, saying its systems detect clearly invalid results during collection and exclude them, and that it has added validation checks that flag potentially inaccurate results.

In some cases, the results page as a whole is clearly off, with results that don’t match the query even on page one.

Getting into AI answers

Each AI tool picks its sources differently, so check them separately

Semrush's AI Visibility Index, which tracked over 180 million AI answers across nine markets and four platforms, found ten domains held 27.9% to 39.2% of citation weight in Google's AI Mode from January to July, against 14.3% to 15.8% on ChatGPT.

Who this affects: Anyone trying to get mentioned in AI answers, especially outside the US.

What to do
  • Ask each AI tool your main question, note which sites it cites
  • Our take: check your own market, not just US results

Do not do this

Google may penalize sites where users can publish pages

Google updated its guidance on user-generated spam and told site owners who let people publish "shareable pages, generated outputs, or interactive tools" to watch for new manual actions (a human penalty from Google). A new section, "Only index content meant for Search", says to check your page indexing and performance reports for unexpected spikes in indexed pages or odd queries.

Google has updated its spam policies (again!) to warn sites that allow users to publish "shareable pages, generated outputs, or interactive tools," as this could be treated as spam.
