Rank trackers were wrong all week. Check Search Console.
One SEO says Google is now locking the top one or two results in place for 7 to 10 days at a time. Rank trackers spent the week showing drops that may never have happened.
Why your traffic moved
Your rank tracker was unreliable all week
Google kept feeding bad results to automated tracking tools all week, so keyword drops in your rank tracker may be fiction. New research shared by Glenn Gabe found Google sometimes answering on just one word from the query, which started in early 2026 and ramped up in September. Barry Schwartz also saw heated ranking movement on Saturday, October 24, with no update announced.
The top 1-2 spots can get LOCKED in place for 7-10 days at a time causing static results
Who this affects: Anyone who watches keyword rankings in a tool like Ahrefs or Semrush.
- Compare any drop against clicks and impressions in Search Console
- Judge the week on revenue, not tracker charts
Getting into AI answers
AI answers now cover most searches, including your brand name
AI Overviews (the AI written answer at the top of results) now appear on more than 80% of searches, according to data from Semrush, SE Ranking and seoClarity reported by Barry Schwartz. Separate SE Ranking data says 82.5% of US brand searches trigger one, and the brand's own site is cited only 39% of the time.
that number falls off for enterprise brands - so SMBs and mid-size companies beware
Who this affects: Everyone with a website, especially smaller brands people search by name.
- Open your About page and add real company details and contacts
- Our take: check what Google says when you search your own name
AI tools still send almost no visitors compared to Google
Three studies landed this week saying AI search visibility may not be worth paying for yet. Marie Haynes looked at twelve months of data across 100 sites and more than 145 million sessions: ChatGPT sent 0.62% of the traffic Google organic did, and all AI tools together 0.73%. ChatGPT visitors did buy more often, 13.8% versus 3.02%, but there are far fewer of them.
Google still drove 27x more conversions than all the other LLMs combined
Who this affects: Any site owner being sold an AI visibility service.
- Check your own analytics for ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic before buying anything
- Keep spending your time on normal Google search
Do not do this
The website software bug is patched, but check your version
The two critical bugs in PHP (the software most websites, including WordPress, run on) were patched this week and the scare is over. Developer @levelsio, who disconnected all his sites and servers until the fix landed at 2 PM UTC, posted afterwards that everything was back up, crediting Ubuntu and the PHP Foundation. The safe versions are 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35.
Who this affects: Anyone with a WordPress site or any site on a normal web host.
- Log into your host and check which PHP version you run
- On 8.1 or older, ask your host to update now
The short list
Google is testing one dashboard for business owners
Google has opened a beta called Business Home, which pulls your Business Profile and other Google business tools into a single place, Barry Schwartz reported.
Penalties on borrowed-authority pages cost jobs
Journalists were laid off after Google hit "parasite SEO" sites with manual penalties, per Barry Schwartz. That is content published on someone else's trusted domain to borrow its rankings.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my rank tracker show big drops this week?
Google was feeding inconsistent results to rank tracking tools all week, so keyword ranking drops you see in Ahrefs or Semrush may not be real. Compare any drops against your actual clicks and impressions in Search Console instead.
What are AI Overviews and how often do they show up?
AI Overviews are AI-written answers that appear at the top of Google search results. They now show on more than 80% of searches, including brand name searches, but the brand's own website is only cited 39% of the time.
How much traffic are ChatGPT and AI search tools actually sending?
ChatGPT sent only 0.62% of the traffic that Google organic search did across one year of data from 100 sites. All AI tools combined sent just 0.73%, so Google remains the main source of search traffic.
What PHP version should I update to for security?
The safe versions after the recent critical bug patch are 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35. If you run 8.1 or older, ask your hosting provider to update now.
