AI answers are turning up on local searches
Two SEOs posted sightings within days of each other, including one AI answer with a map inside it.
Google appears to be putting AI Overviews (the AI-written answer that sits at the top of the results page) on local searches. Two SEOs posted sightings. One of them included a map inside the AI answer itself.
Ben Poulton flagged it first, asking why Google would place a map inside an AI Overview at all. His question was simple. If someone is searching for something nearby, why not just show the usual map results first.
Gagan Ghotra replied with a theory. He said it looks like Google simply wants AI Overviews on more searches than before. That is one SEO's read, not a statement from Google.
A short time later, @kevin_indig posted his own sighting and said it was the first time he had seen an AI Overview for local results.
First time seeing an AI Overview for local results.
What this actually is
Two posts. That is the whole evidence base right now. Google has not announced anything, and nobody knows how often these local AI Overviews show up, which searches trigger them, or whether the map version is a test that will disappear next week.
So treat this as an early sighting, not a rollout. It is worth knowing about because local searches have always worked a particular way. You type in a service and a town, you get the map pack with three nearby businesses, and people click from there. An AI answer sitting above that map changes what a searcher sees first.
Why a small business should care
If you run a shop, a clinic, a restaurant or any business where customers find you by searching for something near them, the map pack is probably where a good share of your calls come from. Anything that pushes it further down the page is worth watching.
But nothing has changed that you can act on yet. There is no new setting, no fix, no penalty involved here. Two people saw something and posted about it.
What to do
Nothing, for now. Keep your Google Business Profile accurate, because that is what feeds local results either way, and check back if more sightings turn up.
If you want an early warning for your own business, run a search for your main service plus your town on your phone this week and note what sits at the top of the page. Do it again in a month. If an AI answer has appeared above the map, you will know before your traffic tells you.
This follows a run of AI answers spreading into places they did not used to appear, including Google's question boxes, which now serve AI answers almost all the time.
seems like Google just want to increase number of queries for which it's serving AI Overviews
If the query is localised, why not serve the normal map first?
