Google is testing payments for content used in AI answers

The pilot runs through Search Console, and Barry Schwartz says it was first spotted back in April.

Google is testing a way to pay publishers when their content gets used in its AI products. Barry Schwartz reports the test covers AI Overviews (the AI written summary at the top of some Google results), AI Mode (Google's chat style search) and Gemini, Google's AI assistant. It runs through Search Console, the free Google tool that shows how your site performs in search, and it is being called an AI contribution pilot.

This follows the earlier sighting of the same programme. What is new is the detail that the pilot works inside Search Console and that it is not brand new. Schwartz notes this is "something we actually spotted last April", so the idea has been sitting in the background for months before this round of reporting.

What this actually means for you

It is a test, not a product. There is no sign-up button in Search Console for most site owners, and the sources do not say who was invited, how much anyone gets paid, or when or whether it opens up more widely. Nobody knows yet.

The reason it matters at all is the direction. Right now, when Google's AI summarises your page, you get a mention at best and often no click. A payment programme would be the first sign that Google is willing to put money against that trade. If it ever goes broad, it would change the maths for anyone whose content gets pulled into AI answers and never visited.

What to do about it

Nothing, for now. There is no action available to you, and hunting for a setting that does not exist is wasted time. Open Search Console once in a while and read any new message in the Messages section, which is where Google would surface an invitation if one arrives for your site.

In the meantime the sensible play has not moved. Keep publishing pages that answer a real question properly, because those are the pages AI systems cite and the pages people still click through to.
