Google is testing buying inside AI answers in India

One SEO spotted a Flipkart tie-up that lets shoppers check out without leaving Google's AI.

Google is testing a way for people in India to buy things without leaving its AI products. Gagan Ghotra reported that Google in India is testing integrating Walmart owned Flipkart into AI Mode (Google's chat style search) and Gemini (Google's AI assistant). According to the post, users will be able to buy products directly inside those experiences.

What is actually new

The new part is the checkout. Until now, an AI answer about a product sent you off to a shop's website to finish the purchase. In this test, the buying happens inside the answer itself.

Ghotra also called it an exclusive Flipkart relationship with Google, and asked what other e-commerce companies in India make of it. That is his read, not a Google announcement. Google has not confirmed the test publicly in the source, and there is no word on how long it runs, how many people see it, or whether it spreads to other countries or other retailers.

Who this affects

If you do not sell in India, this changes nothing for you today. If you do, it is worth knowing that a single large retailer may sit inside the AI answer where shoppers used to click through to a list of stores.

The wider point is the direction. AI answers keep adding reasons for people to stay put instead of clicking out to a website. We have already covered how links inside Google's AI answers go up and down, and how some of those links open more AI rather than your site. A built in checkout is the same idea taken one step further.

What to do

Nothing, unless you sell to customers in India. If you do, keep your product pages, prices and stock accurate everywhere Google can read them, so you stay eligible when shopping features change. For everyone else, this is one country and one test, and it is too early to plan around.
