Google is building simple free tools into its answers
A working character counter now appears inside Google's AI answer box, and SEOs say any simple tool site could be next.
Google has put a working character counter inside AI Overviews, the AI answer box that sits at the top of some search results. You type your text into Google, and Google gives you the count. You never visit a website to get it.
Barry Schwartz reported the new counter, crediting @DamirBilalov, and summed it up as "Goodbye word count websites". We covered the first sighting earlier.
What is new
Glenn Gabe followed with a warning for anyone who runs one of these tools. He also noticed a limit. He says he only sees the counter on desktop, not on mobile, which suggests it is either still rolling out or deliberately limited for now. Nobody outside Google knows which.
Charles Floate made the wider point as a joke, posting about what the Google AI Search team does when it sees "a super simple profitable niche tool". The joke lands because the character counter is exactly that. It is one tiny function, it costs nothing to build, and the pages that ranked for it were mostly a box and an ad.
Who this hits
If your site's traffic comes from a single simple utility, this is the risk. Character counters, word counters, and anything else where the whole page is one input field and one output number. If Google can do that job inside the results page, there is no reason for the visitor to click through to you.
Most small business sites are not in this position. If you sell a service, run a shop, or publish articles that answer real questions, a built-in counter does not touch you. The lesson is narrower than the panic. Google is absorbing things that are trivial to replicate, not things that take research, judgement, or your own experience.
What to do
Open Google Analytics or Search Console and look at your top landing pages. If any single page bringing you real traffic is a free tool that Google could copy in an afternoon, start building a reason for people to come back to your site beyond that one function. If none of your pages look like that, do nothing.
One more thing worth watching. Nobody has said how many tools Google plans to build in, or whether the counter will reach mobile. So far this is one tool, spotted by a handful of SEOs, on one device type. Treat it as a direction of travel rather than a finished change.
If you run a character count tool, a huge heads-up...
