Top Google spots may be frozen in place for days

Charles Floate says some search results have been stuck for weeks, and rank trackers will not tell you the difference.

Google may be freezing some search results in place, according to one SEO. Charles Floate (@charles_seo) says the top one or two spots in a set of results can get locked for 7 to 10 days at a time, which makes those results look strangely static.

He says he showed this inside his private AI SEO community last week, and that @tehseowner was the first person to talk about it publicly. Floate says it has been happening for at least a few weeks.

This sits on top of the fake results story

This is the second thing Floate says Google is doing to search results that nobody asked for. The first was poisoning, where Google serves deliberately wrong results to scrapers, the automated tools that read search pages in bulk. We covered that earlier. Freezing is the new part.

His read on why is that Google is aiming at scrapers and AI competitors, not at you.

None of this is confirmed by Google. It is one SEO reporting what he has seen, with a second account credited for raising it first. Treat it as a reason to be careful with your data, not as settled fact.

What it means for your rank tracker

A rank tracker is a tool that checks where your site shows up in Google for the keywords you care about. It works by loading search results the same way a scraper does. If Google is freezing or faking what those tools see, your tracker can report a number that nobody searching Google would ever get.

So a frozen top spot can look like a competitor who suddenly cannot be beaten. A fake result can look like a drop you did not have. Neither one is your site changing.

Floate's advice is to stop obsessing over rank trackers and look at things that are harder to fake. Compare repeated snapshots of the actual search page. Check your impressions and clicks in Google Search Console, the free Google tool that shows how your site performs in search. Then check revenue.

What to do

Open Search Console, click Performance, and compare the last 28 days to the previous 28 days. If impressions and clicks are steady, a scary number in your rank tracker is probably not about your site. If they are genuinely down, that is a real signal worth chasing.

For most small business owners the practical step is to stop making decisions off a single rank tracking number. Nothing about your pages or your content needs to change because of this.
