Check Google's own report before panicking over a rank drop
Rank trackers are being fed fake results, so Search Console is the sanity check.
If your rank tracking tool shows your rankings collapsing overnight, check Google Search Console before you believe it. Search Console is Google's free report on how your site performs in search, and it shows an average position for your pages. If that number has not moved much, the drop in your tracker is probably not real.
This follows the earlier finding that Google is feeding fake search results to automated tools. Brodie Clark pointed to a study by @nozzleio that looked at 27.5 million results pages across 49 countries and found Google has started serving scrapers a normal looking page with the organic results quietly swapped for irrelevant data.
What the numbers look like
In the study, 8% of all results pages were poisoned after September 13, peaking at around 27% between September 27 and 29. On those pages, organic results kept only about 21% of their usual sites, against 88% on a normal page. Tracked client sites fell out of the top 10 on 58.6% of poisoned pages. Reddit, Facebook and LinkedIn surged to fill the gaps. Ads and Shopping results stayed almost completely intact.
Brodie Clark describes this as Google's countermeasure against automated AI scrapers, with rank trackers caught in the middle. Joy Hawkins also shared the research, calling it good read and research into how common poisoned results shown to rank trackers are.
What to do
Open Search Console, click Performance, switch on Average position, and compare the last 7 days with the previous 7 days. If the line is flat while your tracker shows a cliff, nothing happened to your site and there is nothing to fix.
This also matters when you read about unconfirmed Google updates. Some of the volatility people report may be tool noise rather than a change in rankings. Brodie Clark has since posted an alternate approach to rank tracking that avoids poisoned results, so if your tracker keeps showing drops you cannot verify, that is worth asking your provider about.
For small business owners, the practical takeaway is simple. Treat your rank tracker as a second opinion right now, and treat Search Console as the record.
If GSC hasn't displayed a major deviation, it is likely that it is a data anomaly rather than a change in your ranking
