Google can lose faith in a site for months over bulk pages

Three SEOs are now showing sites that dropped after publishing pages at scale, and Google has put the reason in writing.

Google's John Mueller has spelled out what happens to sites that spin up pages in bulk from a template or a database. His answer, surfaced by Barry Schwartz and posted in full by Glenn Gabe, says Google's systems can stop trusting the whole site, not just the bulk pages, and that getting that trust back takes a long time.

Mueller's words are blunt. He said this kind of page building "often leads to a site that's either spam, borderline spam, or low quality", and that fixing it "tends to take time & significant effort to show the value". He suggested site owners look at how other SEOs work through spam and core update recoveries to get a sense of how long that takes.

Real sites are dropping

Glenn Gabe tied the answer to his own write-up of the August 2026 spam update, where programmatic content came up repeatedly across his four case studies. He also published a video covering scaled content abuse, AI-generated content and programmatic content from that update.

Lily Ray posted a site she says people often held up as programmatic SEO done right, which she says crashed with the recent spam update. Gagan Ghotra flagged an Australian postgraduate course directory built the same way, with a drop that started a few days after the June 2026 spam update and has kept falling since. David G Quaid says Google is handing out scaled content abuse penalties.

What to do

This matters if any part of your site generates pages automatically, like a page per city, per service or per product variation with the wording swapped. Open Search Console, click Pages, and see how many of your indexed pages are that kind of near-duplicate. If a chunk of your site is pages nobody would choose to read, cut them or rewrite them so each one actually answers something, because Mueller's point is that the old pages keep dragging on how Google sees everything else.

It's easy to spin something up with many pages, it's hard to provide real value to users. Our systems have possibly lost faith in your site providing good value to users based on the old pages.

looks like it crashed (more than before) with the recent Google spam update.
