Google results are moving and an update may be underway
Two people who track Google rankings say something is moving, but nobody has confirmed what it is.
Google's search results are shuffling more than usual, according to two SEOs (people who work on Google rankings). Gagan Ghotra flagged "a lot is happening in results today" and said all signs point to a core or some other update soon. Later in the day, David G Quaid posted that "There's a Google update of some kind going on", and Gagan Ghotra agreed, saying it seems like some core or other update is on its way.
There's a Google update of some kind going on
Nothing is confirmed
This is two people reading the same movement, not an announcement. Google has not said an update is running. Neither SEO says what kind of update it might be, how big it is, or which types of sites it touches. Gagan Ghotra's own wording leaves it open, saying let's see if any updates happen by the end of the week.
A core update is a broad change to how Google decides which pages rank. Google usually confirms those publicly when they start and when they finish. Until that happens, movement in the results could be a test, a smaller change, or normal noise.
What this means for your site
If your rankings dropped or jumped in the last day or two, this is a reason not to panic and not to make big changes yet. Rankings bounce around during periods like this and often settle. Rewriting pages, deleting content, or changing your site structure in response to one or two days of movement is how small businesses make a temporary dip permanent.
The useful move is to write down where you stand now. Open Google Search Console, click Performance, set the date range to the last 28 days, and note your clicks and average position for the handful of search terms that actually bring you customers. If something is genuinely shifting, you will want a before picture to compare against next week.
Then wait. If Google confirms an update, it will say so, and you will know whether the movement you saw was part of something real or just a quiet week in the results.
The one thing to do
Check Search Console, save the numbers, and change nothing on your site for now. Watch through the end of the week, which is the window Gagan Ghotra himself pointed to. If your traffic is steady, there is nothing here that requires action from you at all.
all signs pointing towards a core or some other update soon!! #SEO
