That scary homepage warning in Google was just a bug

Search Console briefly told site owners their homepage was not in Google. It was wrong.

For a short time, Google Search Console (the free tool that shows how your site is doing in Google search) told some site owners their homepage had the status "Crawled - currently not indexed". That status normally means Google looked at the page but decided not to add it to search results. For a homepage, that would be about as bad as it gets.

It was not real. Barry Schwartz reported that Google's @johnmu confirmed the indexing reporting bug and called it a "short blip". The pages themselves were fine. Only the report was wrong.

How it surfaced

@Ryan_TreeFiddy spotted the odd status and pinged Glenn Gabe, who saw it too. Gabe described homepages showing up as "Crawled, not indexed", but only for a bit, and said it was fixed pretty quickly.

Gabe also said what everyone reading this is probably thinking.

"I'm sure that scared a bunch of site owners who happened to be checking around that time."

What you should do

Nothing, if the warning has gone. Open Search Console, click Pages, and look at your homepage status now. If it shows as indexed, the blip passed you by or already cleared, and there is no action to take.

If you did panic and start changing things, stop and undo them. People sometimes react to a bad Search Console status by rewriting pages, adding redirects or resubmitting sitemaps. Doing that in response to a report that was simply wrong creates a real problem out of a fake one.

The wider lesson is worth keeping. Search Console reports are Google's description of your site, not your site itself. They break sometimes, and when they do, the numbers move without anything changing on your end. Two other Google reports were running late this week for the same kind of reason.

Before you act on any alarming status in Search Console, do one simple check. Search Google for your exact homepage address, or use the URL Inspection tool and click Test Live URL. If the live test says the page can be indexed, believe the live test over the report.
