Semrush stops tracking Microsoft Copilot visibility on Nov 9
Microsoft is blocking the data, so one way to check if you show up in its AI assistant is going away.
Semrush is switching off its Copilot visibility tracking on 11/9. Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant, and that tracking showed how often your site appeared in its answers. SEO Glenn Gabe posted the email Semrush sent customers, which says the feature is being discontinued because of how Microsoft is preventing the tracking of Copilot data.
I wonder when other platforms will inform customers.
What this means if you pay for an AI visibility tool
AI visibility tools try to answer one question. When somebody asks an AI assistant about your kind of business, does your name come up. Those tools do not get a clean feed of that data from the AI companies. They work around it. When a platform blocks the workaround, the number disappears.
That is what happened here. Semrush is not dropping the feature because nobody wanted it. According to the email Gabe shared, Microsoft is the reason.
Gabe also thinks this will not be the last one. He wrote that AI visibility tools are facing their own version of tracking issues, and wondered aloud when other platforms will tell their customers. That is his expectation, not an announcement from anyone else. No other tool has said it is stopping Copilot tracking, and Microsoft has not said anything publicly in these sources about why it is blocking it.
What to do
If you pay for Semrush and you have been watching your Copilot numbers, export them before 11/9. Once the feature is off, the history may go with it. A screenshot or a CSV of where you stood is better than nothing if you want to compare later.
If you do not use an AI visibility tool, this changes nothing for you today. Your rankings are not affected. Your site is not affected. One report in one paid tool is going away.
The wider point is worth holding on to. Numbers about AI search are softer than numbers about Google search. Google gives you Search Console, which is data straight from the source. The AI assistants mostly do not give anyone that, so tools estimate, and estimates can vanish overnight when a platform decides to block them. Treat AI visibility figures as a rough signal, not a scoreboard you can bank on.
If you want a check that nobody can switch off, do it by hand. Open Copilot, ask it the questions a customer would ask to find a business like yours, and write down whether you show up and who does instead. It takes ten minutes a month and the data is yours.
