Strangers can change your Google listing in four days

Google gives you a short window to reject a suggested edit before it may go live on its own.

Anyone can suggest a change to your Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows your business on Google Maps and in Search. If the suggestion needs your review, Google sends you an email or an in-product notification. From that point you have four days to accept or reject it.

Miss the window and the change can go live without you. Glenn Gabe, posting for people who focus on local search, spelled out the rule. If you do not respond within four days, Google may automatically publish the update when other public information seems to back it up, such as your own business website.

Barry Schwartz flagged the same four day limit, describing it as Google giving you only four days to reject a user suggested edit before using it on your local listing. We covered the window when it first surfaced, in an earlier story.

Why four days is tight

Suggested edits can cover the details customers rely on, like your opening hours or your address. A wrong change that sticks can send people to a closed door. Four days is not long if you are away, if the notification lands in a crowded inbox, or if the email goes to an address nobody checks any more.

The automatic publishing part matters most. Google is not waiting for your approval forever. If the suggested change lines up with what is already public about you, silence can count as agreement.

What to do

Check which email address is attached to your Google Business Profile and make sure it is one you read. Then look at your listing now and confirm the hours, address and phone number are right, because your own website is one of the public sources Google may check when it decides whether to publish someone else's edit.

If a notification arrives, open it the same day. Four days goes fast.
