Google says put the answer at the top of the page

New wording in Google's helpful content document tells site owners to stop burying the thing people came for.

Google has added more detail to its guidance on creating helpful content, this time about main content. Main content is the part of a page that actually answers the question someone searched for. Marie Haynes (@marie_haynes) spotted the change and said the document is her favourite one Google publishes.

The new wording is not a new idea. Haynes pointed out that the same advice already appears in Google's Quality Raters Guidelines, the handbook human reviewers use when they rate search results. One line she quoted says a high quality page has the most helpful main content placed most prominently. Another says content that supports the page purpose without directly contributing to the primary goal can be included, but it should be shown lower on the page in a less prominent position.

That second line is the one worth reading twice. Google calls that extra material filler. It is not saying delete it. It is saying stop putting it above the answer.

Why it showed up now

Nobody outside Google knows. Haynes offered two guesses. One is that Google is trying to help site owners who were hit by past updates figure out how to improve. The other is less comfortable.

She wrote that it could also be a warning for an update that is about to happen. That is speculation from one SEO, not something Google has confirmed. No update has been announced alongside the change.

What to do

Open your three most important pages and read them on a phone. If the reader has to scroll past a long intro, a company history, a bank of stock photos or a list of related services before they reach the thing the page is actually about, move the answer up. Push the supporting material underneath it.

This fits with the other changes Google has made to the same document recently, including a new line about how much effort a page shows. The theme is consistent. Google wants pages that give a real answer fast, and it keeps writing that down in more places.
