Lists that rank your own product first may vanish from AI answers
Florian S. Kluge says his self-ranked lists lost AI Overview citations in October while their normal rankings stayed put.
One SEO says Google quietly stopped using "best of" lists that rank the publisher's own product in first place inside AI Overviews, the AI written answer at the top of Google's results.
Florian S. Kluge posted that listicles that rank the publisher first dropped out of AI Overviews in October. The ordinary blue link rankings for those same pages did not move. Neutral lists, the ones that do not put the publisher's own product at the top, kept their AI citations.
listicles that rank the publisher first dropped out of AI Overviews in october. organic didn't move. the neutral lists didn't either.
How he spotted it
Kluge says he pulled the numbers out of Search Console's new AI report, the one Google added recently to show how often your pages appear in AI answers. That report has no API, which is the hook that lets software grab data automatically, so he says he had an agent read it out of his logged-in Chrome browser.
That is the whole finding. One person, one set of sites, numbers that nobody outside his account has seen. Treat it as a signal worth watching, not a confirmed Google change. Google has not said anything about it, and no second SEO has reported the same pattern yet.
Lily Ray replied to the thread taking issue with the idea that nobody notices, so the claim is already getting pushback from other SEOs.
What it means if you sell something and write lists
Plenty of small businesses publish a "best tools for X" or "top 10 options" post and put their own product at number one. It is an old and fairly normal tactic. If Kluge is right, that page can still rank fine in the regular results while being skipped by the AI answer, and you would never see it in a rank tracker because the ranking did not change.
That is the uncomfortable part. A ranking drop is loud. Losing an AI citation is silent.
What to do
Open Search Console, go to the Performance report, and look at the AI mode and AI Overviews data for any "best of" or comparison page you have written. Compare September to October. If a self-ranked list lost AI impressions while its clicks and position held steady, you have seen the same thing Kluge describes.
If you want the AI citation, the obvious fix is an honest list. Rank the options on what they actually do, say plainly that one of them is yours, and let the comparison be real. That is also just a better page for the person reading it.
If you do not publish lists like this, there is nothing to do here.
