Google fed rank trackers results for one word of your query
A week of frozen, scrambled and heated search results means your keyword chart probably lied to you.
Google has been serving fake search results to automated tracking tools, and new research says one version of the trick is stranger than anyone thought. Derek Perkins posted that he and his team published research on a type of poisoning where Google ignores most of the words in your query. Glenn Gabe, who shared the research, said Google was returning results based on just one word, "which would obviously throw off the entire SERP".
So if you search a five word phrase, the results that come back may be answering a single word from it. For a rank tracker (a tool that checks your position in Google every day), that means the page it records has little to do with the keyword you asked about.
It started in early 2026
Perkins said this has been going on since early 2026 and spiked in the last month. Gabe put the ramp up in September 2026. Perkins also said his team updated their original post with data about page two, and that the poisoning problem is significantly worse than originally reported.
That lands on top of two other things from the same week. Charles Floate said Google is also freezing some results, with the top one or two spots locked in place for seven to ten days at a time, which we covered earlier. And Barry Schwartz reported heated ranking movement on Saturday, October 24, with no official update announced.
What to do
If your rank tracking chart showed a scary drop this week, do not act on it yet. Floate's advice was to stop obsessing over rank trackers and compare repeated search result snapshots, Search Console impressions and clicks, and revenue instead.
Open Google Search Console, click Performance, and compare the last seven days against the previous seven for impressions and clicks. That data comes from Google itself, not from a tool querying Google from the outside, so the poisoning does not touch it. If impressions and clicks are steady, the drop in your tracker is probably not real.
Nobody has said how long this lasts or when trackers will be reliable again. Google has not publicly confirmed any of it.
The top 1-2 spots can get LOCKED in place for 7-10 days at a time causing static results
they ignore the majority of the words in your query
